Mode 1 Charging (Not Recommended/Rare Today)

Mode 1 is the most basic type of EV charging. It involves plugging an electric vehicle directly into a standard household socket without any built-in safety features or communication between the charger and the car. Because of the safety risks (overheating, no load control, no fault protection), Mode 1 is no longer permitted for most EVs in the UK.

Mode 2 Charging (Portable “Trickle” Charger)

Mode 2 charging uses a normal household socket, but the cable includes an in-line safety box (ICCB) that provides basic protection. This type of charging is generally acceptable for low-power, slow charging. It is not advised for regular or long-term use because household sockets were never designed to carry sustained high loads for many hours. Mode 2 chargers are also pricey and prone to theft, as there is usually no locking system to secure the cable. Although most EVs come with a Mode 2 charger as standard, it is best treated as an emergency option.

Mode 3 Charging (Dedicated EV Charge Point)

Mode 3 is the standard and recommended method for charging electric vehicles at home, work, and public locations. It requires a dedicated EV charge point that includes full communication, smart control, built-in RCD protection, load management, safety checks, and faster charging. Mode 3 chargers are permanently installed and designed specifically for EVs.

How Long Do EV Chargers Last?

Most home EV chargers last 10–15 years, while portable Mode 2 chargers average around 5–10 years. Lifespan depends on factors like build quality, installation, environment, usage frequency, and electrical protection. Regular care and correct installation can help ensure the charger operates safely and reliably for many years.
