What Are the Different Levels of EV Charging?
There are three main modes of EV charging, each catering to different needs:
Mode 1:
Typically using a standard household outlet, these cost-effective chargers have the lowest voltage and, therefore, take longer to charge your vehicle fully. Mode 1 chargers are ideal for overnight charging at home.
Mode 2:
These chargers tend to be more expensive to install than Mode 1 chargers but will offer faster and more efficient vehicle charging. Mode 2 chargers are often found at public filling stations, although they can be installed for home charging.
This will charge the vehicle at 32A of current, which would roughly equal 20MPH. This charging speed should be sufficient to fully charge your vehicle over one night.
Mode 3:
Widely known as rapid chargers, these are regarded as the fastest option, capable of charging most of your EV’s battery in about an hour. Mode 3 chargers are generally used at commercial locations rather than residential properties, providing a top-up while you’re out and about.
